Annie Hawkins

Annie Hawkins is a self-taught oil painter with over 40 years of experience and an enduring fascination with vast open spaces, solitary landscapes, and coastal water scenes. Her works are typically muted in colour and restrained in composition, inviting the viewer to imagine themselves within the scene rather than simply observing it.

Through the careful capture of light, texture, and atmosphere, each painting is brought to life, allowing the eye to move fluidly across the surface and return again. Her subjects are often inspired by isolated and abandoned cottages set within expansive landscapes, spaces that carry a quiet emotional weight.

Annie finds a sense of soul within these structures, particularly in windows that echo the presence of eyes, creating an immediate emotional connection. These elements draw the viewer into the narrative of each place, evoking stories embedded in the land and architecture.

Deeply inspired by Australia’s remote landscapes, this connection was shaped through childhood bushwalks with her grandparents. Time spent immersed in nature continues to influence her practice, with a focus on observing the tones, shapes, and rhythms of the natural world.

In the studio, painting is both grounding and energising. Annie is drawn to landscapes and seascapes, favouring muted, natural palettes and aerial perspectives that verge on abstraction.

Her work has been featured in multiple Bluethumb Online Gallery curations and she was honoured as one of Bluethumb’s Top 10 Landscape Artists of 2023. She has also been featured in Home Beautiful magazine as “Australian Artists Local Talent – Artists to Buy From Now”, and was a finalist in the Bluethumb Art Prize in both 2020 and 2023.
